Evidence-Based Adjustments Tailored to Your Body and Your Goals
Chiropractic care is a healthcare discipline focused on diagnosing and treating neuromuscular disorders through manual adjustment and manipulation of the spine. The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and support the body's natural ability to heal itself.
At Bay View Chiropractic in Milwaukee, we use evidence-based techniques to restore proper joint motion, reduce nerve interference, and optimize your body's biomechanics. Serving Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood and surrounding communities for over 15 years, Dr. Fritz combines multiple adjustment methods to create a personalized treatment plan that works for your unique needs.
A chiropractic adjustment (also called spinal manipulation) involves applying controlled force to a specific joint that has become restricted in its movement. Here's what happens:
Every patient is different, so I use multiple techniques to find what works best for your body, comfort level, and condition. My approach includes:
The Gold Standard
This is the classic "hands-on" adjustment you typically think of when you picture chiropractic care. I use precise, controlled force applied by hand to specific joints.
Best for: Most patients, general spinal issues, restoring full range of motion
What you'll feel: Brief thrust, often accompanied by an audible "pop" or "crack" (which is just gas releasing from the joint—completely normal and safe)
Gentle, Low-Force
Uses a small spring-loaded instrument to deliver a quick, controlled impulse to the spine. Very gentle and precise.
Best for: Patients who prefer gentler treatment, elderly patients, acute inflammation, pediatric cases
What you'll feel: Quick, light clicking sensation—no twisting or "popping"
Assisted Adjustment
Uses a specialized table with sections that drop slightly when force is applied, assisting the adjustment with less manual force required.
Best for: Patients who need gentler treatment, larger or more muscular patients, specific joint restrictions
What you'll feel: Table section drops as adjustment is made—very comfortable for most patients
Specialized for Disc Issues
Uses a special table that gently stretches and flexes the spine in a pumping rhythm. Excellent for disc-related problems.
Best for: Herniated discs, sciatica, spinal stenosis, leg pain, patients who can't tolerate traditional adjustments
What you'll feel: Gentle stretching and rhythmic movement—very comfortable and relaxing
Chiropractic care is effective for a wide range of conditions affecting the spine, joints, and nervous system:
Muscle strains, joint dysfunction, disc issues, sciatica, sacroiliac problems
Muscle tension, joint restrictions, whiplash, tech neck, cervical disc issues
Tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, migraines with cervical component
Radiating leg pain, numbness, tingling from spinal nerve irritation
Sprains, strains, overuse injuries, biomechanical problems affecting performance
Repetitive stress injuries, poor ergonomics, occupational strains
Joint stiffness, decreased mobility, osteoarthritis management
Rotator cuff issues, impingement, frozen shoulder, general shoulder dysfunction
Joint dysfunction, muscle imbalances, biomechanical issues
Forward head posture, rounded shoulders, spinal curvature issues
Chiropractic adjustments work even better when combined with our other specialized services:
Chiropractic care is extremely safe when performed by a licensed professional. Serious complications are extremely rare (less than 1 in several million adjustments). However, there are some contraindications:
Absolute contraindications (no adjustment):
Relative contraindications (modified treatment):
During your initial exam, I'll identify any concerns and modify treatment accordingly. Your safety is always the top priority.
Most patients find adjustments relieving, not painful. You may feel brief pressure or hear a "pop," but this should not hurt. If you have acute inflammation, there might be some tenderness, but we adjust our technique accordingly. Many patients describe feeling immediate relief.
The audible release during an adjustment is caused by gas (nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide) rapidly releasing from the joint fluid when the joint surfaces separate. It's similar to opening a bottle of soda. The sound itself has no correlation with the quality or effectiveness of the adjustment.
Every patient is different, and Dr. Fritz takes time to customize treatment plans to each individual's unique needs and goals. Some patients feel significantly better after just a few visits, while others with more complex or chronic conditions benefit from more comprehensive care plans. After your examination, Dr. Fritz will discuss realistic expectations and work with you to create a plan that makes sense for your situation and budget.
No. While you might be able to make your joints "crack," this is not the same as a specific chiropractic adjustment. You cannot control which joints move or in what direction. Self-manipulation can actually make problems worse by over-stretching already hypermobile joints while missing the restricted joints that actually need treatment.
No. Our goal is to resolve your current problem and give you the tools to maintain your results. Some patients choose periodic "maintenance" visits (monthly or quarterly) to stay ahead of problems, but this is entirely optional. We work toward making you as independent as possible.
Schedule your comprehensive consultation and examination. Let's identify what's causing your problem and create a plan to fix it.
